CALL TO ORDER
The Haworth Volunteer Fire Department held a special scheduled business
meeting on Thursday, February 17, 2000 at the Haworth Fire Station.
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chief Middleton. Members
present were: Storey, Donaldson, Hattabaugh, Batson, Farley, Smith, Middleton,
Boyd, & Hall. Others present were: Jack Brown, Stuart Cowart,
Vic Marsh, Jim Ferguson, George Burns, Richard McPeak, Rex Helms, Jay Lundry,
Randy Beason, & Wayne Maye.
POLLARD SUBSTATION
Members of the Pollard Community and of the Fire Department discussed
the possibility of establishing a Substation of the Haworth Volunteer Fire
Department in the Pollard area. Community members present expressed
considerable interest. Middleton proposed that if the residents of
the Pollard area would locate a site and construct the building, that the
Haworth Volunteer Fire Department would station Engine-1 there, and would
also staff and maintain the Substation and apparatus.
Storey reported that he had spoken with a few local insurance agents on the possible savings that area residents would receive on their property insurance by going from a Class 10 to a Class 9 ISO Rating. Based on a $50,000 wood frame home, Farm Bureau quoted a Class 10 premium of $640, while the Class 9 premium would be $570; Farmers Union quoted a Class 10 premium of $664, while the Class 9 premium would be $590; State Farm quoted a Class 10 premium of $968, while the Class 9 premium would be $839.
Pollard area residents present at the meeting agreed to the proposal and wished to proceed with the project. Middleton requested that they select a location and construct the building and the Department would begin looking for a pumper to replace Engine-1 at the Redland Substation.
The size and type of construction for the building was discussed. Middleton informed them that the only requirements were that the building be capable of housing the apparatus and must be well insulated and also be equipped with a heater. Middleton also advised them that the building did not necessarily have to be built on a concrete slab, that it could be a gravel (dirt) floor similar to the Redland Substation. The building would need to be approximately 20' x 35', so that it would be capable of housing a pumper. The Department has a spare 10' x 10' overhead door that can be used on the Substation.
Jay Lundry reported that Aubrey Thompson had stated that he had funding available for the project. Community residents are to consult with Thompson to learn what type of and how much funding was available.
A resident of the area inquired about installing a fire hydrant near the station. Wayne Maye stated the Rural Water has established a policy of not installing hydrants on lines smaller than 6 inches. Installing a “dry hydrant” was also discussed.
